Esco’s Technical Paper on Biological Safety Cabinets was published in Clean Air and Containment Review Journal

Singapore February 25, 2011 – The technical paper authored by Lin Xiang Qian, CEO was successfully published as one of the main feature articles in the January issue of Clean Air and Containment Review Journal. The said piece was entitled – Biological Safety Cabinets: Comparison between European and US Standards.

Clean Air and Containment Review Journal was launched in January 2010. This journal circulates quarterly for users, manufacturers, designers, specifiers, installers and testers of cleanrooms, clean air and containment equipment.

Mr. Lin’s article discussed the two standards which are very important in the fields of Biological Safety Cabinets at present. The document highlights and addresses the distinctions between the two standards and a conclusion was given with careful judgment.

European and US Standards Defined

EN12469:2000 is the harmonized European standard for microbiological safety cabinets. It is one of the series of European biotechnology safety standards that specifies the requirements for safety cabinet construction, as well as, the performance criteria.

ANSI/NSF49, on the other hand, is the American National Standard that also specifies both the safety cabinet construction and performance criteria. It gained official recognition from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in the year 2002 with significant revisions made to the standard in 2009.

In addition to the standards differentiations, the technical paper provides valuable information relative to the classifications/nomenclature of biological safety cabinets, performance criteria and physical measurement/testing, physical performance tests and acceptance criteria and cabinet construction requirements.
